RE: Check Engine Light came on

Must be Chrysler problem. I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and the check engine light came on 3 days ago with 48,000 miles. Just started the engine up that morning and it was on. Had to buy a new gas cap 2 days earlier as I left my current one at the last gas fill up (must have been a senior momemt) but I understand if there is any problem with the gasoline pressure system the check engine will come on immediately. Was told by a Chrysler dealer that even turning on the ignition to check the fuel gauge will filling up will cause the light to come on so surely the gas cap shouldn't be at fault. Will see the first Auto Zone I can get to.

DVD/VCR Recorder/Player with digital tuner

Does anyone have any experience with the DVD/VCR recorders with a digital tuner, which I am thinking will be simpler to use instead of a converter box after Feb 2009. This way I can record or watch any digital station using the bat wing antenna and the digital tuner in the recorder. I just don't seem to have the room for one of the converter boxes in the overhead cabinet in my coach.
Is any one particular brand better than the other? Wally World carries the Magnavox for around $180 but most of the Sonys, JVCs, and Panasonics I've seen advertised seem to be running around $250-$350. I have a Sony in the MH and a JVC at home but neither of them are digital ready. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

RE: Air Dryer Filters Replacement

JUrban - When changing the air dryer filter, how did you get the air hoses loose to be able to get the whole unit out on the desk? I changed mine last spring but had to get the 4 bolts off and the filter out by working underneath the coach since the air line with the slip-type joint just wouldn't give. Would have been much nicer out on the work bench. Called Gaffney and they said they change the filters all the time with the dryer still attached to the frame, though I can't imagine how you'd do that and keep all the dirt and grit out of the dryer as the new filter is being put in.

RE: One More Newmar Complaint

That seems to be the opinion of the whole automotive vehicle maintenance industry. "If we didn't fix it the first time, bring it back and we'll try again". Yes, that's all we as consumers have to do, just keep running back to the shop time and time again. I've been to Forest City twice now for a front slide-out adjustment and it gets worse each time. Wish it was back where it was before they started monkeying with it.

RE: WWW in Internet addresses?

Thanks for all the replys. Being a real novice in computering, some of the answers I slightly understood and the rest went so far over my head I couldn't even see them. But I'm certainly keeping all these on file so I can keep reviewing them as my computer skills increase. Wish I had even 1/10th the computer knowledge most of you'all do. Thanks again.

WWW in Internet addresses?

Does anyone know why every Internet web address always starts with WWW? Is there any other web service besides World Wide Web? All the ads always say "WWW _____.something. I never have to use WWW when accessing a web page, are there web page addresses that start with something besides WWW? Just curious.

RE: Diesel engine thermostat operation

Thanks Brett - Almost sounds too easy to be true. Will definitely try it. Have replaced thermostats on gas engines for 50 years so hopefully this will be a new but pleasurable experience. As usual, you've been a great help for someone trying to learn the diesel field.

RE: Diesel engine thermostat operation

Thanks for all the replys. This engine has run this cool since new so I suppose its even possible one or both of the thermostats could have been left out completely on installation. I'm reading these temperatures off my Trip-Tek which shows degree by degree. I can watch it go from 154 to 155 to 156 and on up to around 167 on a cool day crusing down the highway. It sets about 194-195 going up mountain passes. I've wondered how the cooling liquid could flow around the thermostats in a diesel and not heat up. Seeing those truckers with the flaps closed on their front radiators in the winter, I always wondered why that was necessary if the thermostats kept the liquid at 180-190 degrees. Guess I'll just have to crawl under my bed, get on top of the engine and see what the thermostats look like.
I know what a thermostat housing for one thermostat will looks like on a gas engine, but where and how does a diesel use two thermostats?????
Help Brett.

Camping w/o reservations in the Smokys

Is anyone having problems finding a campsite for a MH or TT in the Smokys this time of year without reservations? A lot of the ads say Reservations Suggested in June and October, but how is the first part of November going? I hate reservations with a passion since it can tie you down too long in one place or make you have to move on when you'd rather stay put a few days longer. Looks like it will be at least the first week of November before we can make it due to family obligations. Thanks.

RE: Update needed on Smoky Mt foliage colors

Really appreciating all the reports. Just happen to think, is anyone having any trouble getting a camping site without reservations? I hate having to reserve everywhere I go since I like to move around to different locations and never know how long I'll want to stay at any one place. Thought maybe this would be late enough in the season that maybe it wouldn't be too crowded. Thanks again, you'all have been great.

Update needed on Smoky Mt foliage colors

Thought I was going to the Smokys 2 weeks ago and got a very good report off this forum, but unfortunately things happened that wiped out that expectation. Now it looks like it will be next week, but am I too late for any colors and would therefore be wasting my fuel for this year? All your excellent information will be greatfully appreciated.
Thanks.

RE: fluid level in the differential

I was thinking I had read somewhere the 85-145 was for synthetic oil and the 80-90 was standard oil. I could be wrong, maybe someone else can verify this.

RE: SuperSteer Motion control unit?

FLUF - Be careful about taking the 3/4 hour per axle installation time as gospel. The front ones are in plain open site and I did both sides of mine in probably 15 minutes. But the rear ones are a complete different story. On my Meridian, wiggling under the rear axle and scrunching around the right side wasn't too bad. The one on the driver's side is barely visible and it takes some shifting all the lines around that run right over the top of the air bag in order to reach the air line. And be sure you have a tube cutter that will cut square and smooth to be sure there will be no air leaks. The thought of having to correct an air leak on the driver's side kept me from trying this for a couple years but finally decided to bite the bullet and do it. Everything worked fine, should have done it long ago. Good luck on your installation.

Diesel engine thermostat operation

I have a 4 year old Cat C-7 engine that will only reach 194-197 degrees when pulling hard on a very warm day. Cruising down the highway on a cool day, 50-60 degrees outside, the engine temperature will usually take an hour's driving to reach 160-167 degrees and stay there most of the day if the outside temp stays the same. Most car engines with 195 degree thermostat will reach that temperature in just a few minutes driving and stay about that all day, whether a hot or cool day. Is my diesel operating as it should or is one or both (at least I've read they have two) of the thermostats frozen open? Its done this since day one when it was new. I know the recommendation is to change the thermostats every 3 years but if this is the way they should operate I didn't want to risk changing things for the worse. Maybe I shouldn't complain since I've read so many cases of diesels running hot. Any ideas?

RE: Yikes, my bathtub has some cracks!!

The Southwind 32V must have been prone to crack bathtubs. I had a '97 that the tub developed a 2-3 inch crack just above the drain hole the 3rd day I had it (bought it new). The dealer patched it fairly well but you could definitely still see it. About a couple months later the tub stall developed a 6-8 inch crack. This time the dealer said they'd just change out the whole deal, tub, stall and all. Since the tub and stall are all one piece I couldn't even imagine how they would get all that out and the new one back in but they did somehow (I didn't even ask what all they had to do - didn't want to know.
I've heard if you are going to patch it you definitely will need to know if its plastic or some kind of fiberglas. Good Luck.

RE: Windshield Wipers

And the old vacuum wipers had a booster pump on one side of the fuel pump that kept the stall from happening, until the booster went bad and you either replaced the whole fuel pump or just contended with the stall when accelerating. Boy, we're reaching back.

RE: Do you not go RV'ing anymore

We've RVed for the last 20 years (hate the thought of staying in a motel), retired 15 years ago, and now go on longer trips than before. Have a brother who bought a 33 ft 5th wheel about 3 years ago and only uses it for Club campouts. Says he can rent a car and stay in excellent motel/hotels a lot cheaper and easier than pulling the trailer by searching the Internet for the best rates.

RE: SuperSteer Motion control unit?

I installed a set on my 2004 Meridian about a year ago, and they do make a difference but its more subtle than enormously. I think the write-up in Motor Home magazine several years ago stated it made a subtle difference. You'll still get sway and bounce going in and out of drive ways but not as severe. Still a good after-market add-on.
And yes, they do look like $20-$25 each would be a big price for no more than there is to them, just a tube with an orfice in it, but as I remember mine were about $180-$200 a pair depending on the size of air hose.
